San Diego Padres (38-63) At Cincinnati Reds (49-53), 12:35 P.m.
(Sports Network) - Lanky Floridian Bronson Arroyo tries to stay red-hot when the Cincinnati Reds host the San Diego Padres this afternoon to wrap up a three-game series at Great American Ball Park. Arroyo, a Key West native who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs just 194 pounds, has won four straight starts since allowing 10 runs in an inning on June 24 in Toronto, the worst outing of his career . He's given up 21 hits and eight earned runs in 25 innings over the four victories, including an eight-inning stint against the New York Mets on Friday that ended in a 5-2 Reds win. Arroyo beat the Padres in San Diego on May 24, allowing seven hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings. He's 3-4 lifetime in seven starts against the Padres with a 3.98 earned run average in 40 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, veteran right-hander Greg Maddux tries to end a 13-start winless string for San Diego, which matches the longest drought of his illustrious career. His last win came May 10 against Colorado, when he defeated the Rockies with six innings of three-hit ball. Maddux is 0-4 since, including a 4-1 loss to Atlanta on July 12 - the eighth time in those 13 starts that the Padres have supported him with three or fewer runs. Maddux, who's won 23 games and posted a 3.45 ERA in 53 career starts against the Reds, allowed six hits and an earned run in 5 1/3 innings of San Diego's 12-9, 18-inning win over Cincinnati on May 25. The Reds evened this series on Tuesday, with Jeff Keppinger doubling home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Cincinnati a 4-3 win over the Padres. Jay Bruce went 3-for-6 and scored the game-winner, while Paul Bako drove in a pair of runs in helping the Reds snap a two-game slide. Gary Majewski (1-0) anchored a terrific Cincinnati bullpen effort and picked up the win by throwing a perfect top of the 11th. Brian Giles posted a two-run double while Edgar Gonzalez notched three of the Padres' six hits in the club's seventh loss in eight games. Bryan Corey (1-3) took the loss with his performance in the final inning. Padres starter Jake Peavy and counterpart Johnny Cueto took no-decisions, with each allowing three runs in their six innings of work. Peavy fanned five and allowed seven hits, while the rookie Cueto allowed four hits while striking out 10, tying his career high set in his first major league start on April 3. The teams have split six matchups this season, but San Diego holds an 11-7 advantage in the series since the start of the 2006 campaign.
