Fontenot Lifts Cubs Over Giants

POSTED: 10:39 pm PDT July 2, 2008

(Sports Network) - Mike Fontenot's solo home run in the top of the eighth inning broke a tie game and proved to be the game-winner in Chicago's 6-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants in the third installment of a four-game set.

Jim Edmonds went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and a two-run homer for the Cubs, who won for just the second time in seven games. Geovany Soto also knocked in a pair during a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.

Ryan Dempster did not factor in the decision and is still winless in eight road starts this season. The right-hander fanned seven and allowed just two runs on five hits and two walks in his six-inning start, but Carlos Marmol (2-3) took the win despite giving up a game-tying three-run homer in the seventh.

The Giants' Kevin Correia also took a no-decision, yielding four runs on seven hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings of work. Tyler Walker (3-4) surrendered Fontenot's home run and was credited with the loss.

Ray Durham went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a three-run home run, while John Bowker accounted for the other two San Francisco runs with a two-run long ball in the club's second loss in three games.

After Durham's three run homer knotted the game in the seventh, Fontenot quickly took the wind out of the Giants' sails with one swing of the bat. With one out, the second baseman worked a 3-1 count and crushed a belt-high fastball over the right field wall for the eventual game-winning, solo blast.

Kerry Wood gave up a two-out triple to Jose Castillo in the ninth, but caught Fred Lewis looking at a third strike to finish up his 21st save of the year.

The Cubs jumped on top in the second after Mark DeRosa's single put runners on the corners with no outs. Matt Murton grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, but Edmonds came in to score the game's first run.

Edmonds did it with the bat in the sixth, following a Soto double with his ninth homer of the year, a towering, opposite-field shot to left.

Bowker got the runs right back with his own round-tripper in the bottom half, a two-out homer that landed in McCovey Cove beyond the right-field wall.

With a pair of runners on in the seventh, Derrek Lee struck out, but both base runners smartly moved into scoring position for Soto, whose two-out liner up the middle drove in a pair for a 5-2 Cubs lead.

The three-spot wouldn't last long, as San Fran worked a two-out rally started by a pinch-hit Travis Denker walk and a single by Lewis. Durham slammed the first pitch he saw from Marmol into the right-field stands to tie the ballgame.

Game Notes

The Giants are 4-16 in their last 20 games in San Francisco...It was Durham's first home run since May 28, a span of 104 at-bats...In the series finale on Thursday, Chicago's Sean Gallagher (3-3) squares off against San Fran's ace Tim Lincecum (9-1).
