Giants Win Behind Sandoval, Send D'Backs To Fifth Straight Loss

POSTED: 10:35 pm PDT September 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - Pablo Sandoval slid home safely following a Eugenio Velez single to right field with one out in the ninth inning, boosting San Francisco over Arizona, 5-4, sending the Diamondbacks to their ninth straight road loss.

Arizona's defeat is one shy of a franchise-record for consecutive road losses, and the Diamondbacks also fell 2 1/2 games behind the Dodgers for first place in the NL West. Los Angeles won, 6-2, at San Diego Tuesday night.

Chris Snyder's two-run homer off Brian Wilson (3-2) tied the game in the top of the ninth inning, but the Giants managed to win their fourth in a row despite leaving 15 men on base.

Barry Zito struck out nine and allowed five hits and two runs over six innings in the start for San Francisco. Doug Davis gave up six hits and two runs through 5 1/3 innings for Arizona, which tied a season-high with its fifth straight loss.

Chris Young singled prior to Snyder's homer to left-center with nobody out in the ninth, but Jon Rauch (4-7) put the first two men on base in the bottom half as Sandoval singled to left and Nate Schierholtz walked. Juan Cruz then retired Omar Vizquel on a fly ball to left field. Velez followed with a single to right field. The throw home was on line, but Sandoval's left hand touched the plate before Snyder could apply the tag.

Davis singled in a run in the second inning and Stephen Drew followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 margin.

Zito singled in Schierholtz in the bottom half, and the Giants tied it on Bengie Molina's pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth.

San Francisco then went ahead 4-2 in the eighth on RBI singles from pinch- hitter Fred Lewis and Rich Aurilia.

Game Notes

Aurilia, who had three hits, has 552 RBI as a Giant, tying Bobby Bonds for 10th place on the team list...Snyder had three hits...The three-game series will conclude Wednesday afternoon with Dan Haren (14-8) taking the mound for Arizona and Brad Hennessey (1-1) pitching for the Giants.
