Giants' Cain Leaves Game Early

POSTED: 9:36 pm PDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - San Francisco Giants righty Matt Cain left Saturday's 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres after getting hit on his pitching arm by a liner off the bat of Tim Stauffer.

Cain, who entered play Saturday tied for the second-most wins in the NL, took the shot just above his right elbow in the second inning and grimaced in pain while being looked at by team staff.

The All-Star attempted to stay in the game, but his warmup pitches were way off the mark and he was replaced by righty Justin Miller.

"He (Cain) had numbness, that's a pretty good shot he took," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He wanted to stay out there...there was no way he was staying out there."

Cain, who had two strikeouts and allowed four hits in his shortest outing since September 3, 2007, was diagnosed with a bruise after x-rays were negative.

Miller (2-1) came on in relief and tossed 3 1/3 innings of one-hit ball. He also fanned two batters to get the win.
