Tigers Top Angels With Late Runs

POSTED: 9:44 pm PDT September 3, 2008

(Sports Network) - Curtis Granderson tripled in the go-ahead run in the seventh and the Detroit Tigers went on to post a 9-6 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim, in the second of three games from Comerica Park.

Placido Polanco had three hits and knocked in three runs while Granderson finished with three hits and scored three runs for the Tigers, who had dropped two in a row and three of four coming in.

Starter Zach Miner surrendered five runs on eight hits without walking a batter over six frames. Kyle Farnsworth (2-2) got the win after entering in the seventh to toss 1 2/3 scoreless frames.

Mark Teixeira had three hits including a home run with three RBI while Brandon Wood was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Angels, who have dropped two of three. Starter Jon Garland gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings of a no-decision.

The magic number for the Angels to clinch the AL West championship remained at seven.

Jose Arredondo (7-2) took over for Garland in the seventh as the Tigers took a 7-6 lead. Brandon Inge singled and scored on a triple from Granderson. Polanco followed with a run-scoring single to left.

"We hung in there again. We keep battling away offensively," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Detroit tacked on two more in the eighth when Mike Hessman took Justin Speier deep for a two-run shot for a 9-6 lead. Fernando Rodney came on and worked a rocky ninth, getting out of a bases-loaded, one-out situation to notch his eighth save on the season.

"We had a lot of opportunities. We got a lot of hits for the game but we couldn't get the hits late in the game to cash in," LA skipper Mike Scioscia said. "Those guys (Rodney, Farnsworth) can get the key strikeout when they need it and that's what they did."

Detroit took an early lead with a pair of runs in the first on an Ordonez single and Cabrera's sacrifice fly.

Teixeira cut the lead to one with a solo home run to right in the fourth but the Tigers regained their two-run led in the fifth on an RBI single from Gary Sheffield.

A four-run fifth for LA provided a brief two-run lead. Back-to-back singles to open the frame set up an RBI double from Wood and Sean Rodriguez followed with a sac fly. Chone Figgins plated a run with a groundout before Garret Anderson doubled to right and scored on an RBI single from Teixeira.

After Inge walked and Granderson reached on an infield single, Polanco tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run double to left in the home half.

LA went ahead 6-5 in the seventh as Clay Rapada took the mound for Detroit. Figgins drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a single from Anderson and scored on Teixeira's RBI single to left. Rapada exited in favor of Farnsworth, who loaded the bases by allowing a single to Vladimir Guerrero but recovered to get Torii Hunter on strikes and induce Kendry Morales into a fly out to keep it a one-run game.
