Yankees Go With Pettitte For Game 6

POSTED: 5:30 pm PST November 3, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Yankees have named Andy Pettitte the starter for Game 6 of the World Series Wednesday against the Phillies at Yankee Stadium.

Pettitte will be New York's third consecutive starter to pitch on three days' rest in the Fall Classic, following A.J. Burnett and CC Sabathia's outings in the last two games.

Pettitte, who won the clinching Game 6 of the ALCS against the Angels, has a record of 3-1 in five career postseason starts on short rest. The veteran lefty is 3-0 this postseason in four starts, and will look to clinch New York's 27th World Series title with the team holding a 3-2 lead in the best- of-seven series. Pettitte's 17 postseason wins are already the most in major league history.

"I really don't think there's that big of a difference, I really don't," said Pettitte of the short rest. "I think more than anything I guess you'd probably fatigue a little bit quicker than you normally would, just because your body gets so into a routine of pitching on every fifth day and then you're shortening your rest time a little bit. don't even remember when the last time I went on three days' rest. I know I went on three days' rest in the World Series against the Marlins, and I know that it was a good outing."

Pettitte threw Game 2 of that series against Florida and came within an out of a complete-game in New York's 6-1 victory, but the Yankees lost the series in six games.

He'll be up against Philadelphia's Pedro Martinez on Wednesday. Martinez, the long-time Yankee adversary from his days with the Boston Red Sox, took the loss in Game 2 at Yankee Stadium.

"I look at this situation as a blessing," stated Martinez. "I mean, what else would I want? I'm doing the job I love. I'm doing something that not everybody gets to do. If you consider the fact that I was -- two months back I was sitting at home not doing anything, none of you were thinking of me whatsoever, none of you were asking me questions, and today I am here, probably pitching one of the biggest games ever in the World Series, two great teams with a whole bunch of legendary players that are going to be."

The switch to the Bronx was made possible after Philadelphia got to Burnett for six runs in just two-plus innings Monday, staving off elimination with an 8-6 victory.
