Most Liveable City: Plymouth, Minn.

Money Magazine Ranks Best Small Cities For Families

POSTED: 2:49 pm PDT July 14, 2008

It might have a long, cold winter, but the city of Plymouth, Minn., is still the most liveable city, according to a new survey by Money magazine.

Plymouth, a Twin Cities suburb with a population of 70,100, boasts good schools, good jobs, affordable housing, low crime and an active outdoor culture, the magazine says.

"This year, Money's No. 1 Best Place to Live reflects robust Midwestern values in a small city that is 30 minutes from a vibrant metropolis, with a low cost of living, rising incomes, and job growth," said Money magazine's managing editor, Eric Schurenberg. "It's simply a great place to raise a family, join a community and build a rich life."

Mayor Kelli Slavik, says the distinction of being named the most liveable city is another thing that residents of Plymouth can take pride in. "Those of us living in Plymouth have always been proud of our community -- our parks, schools and overall quality of life," she said.

Fort Collins, Colo, comes in at No. 2, followed by Naperville, Ill. Rounding out the top five are Irvine, Calif., and Franklin Township, N.J.

The magazine used statistics from data provider OnBoard and consultant Bert Sperling of BestPlaces.net to rank the best small cities for families, looking specifically for good jobs, a healthy local economy, and a sane real estate market.

The top 10 places to live:

  1. Plymouth, Minn.
  2. Fort Collins, Colo.
  3. Naperville, Ill.
  4. Irvine, Calif.
  5. Franklin Township, N.J.
  6. Norman, Okl.
  7. Round Rock, Texas
  8. Columbia/Ellicott City, Md.
  9. Overland Park, Kan.
  10. Fishers, Ind.

Profiles of the top 10 and a full list of the top 100 are available at CNNMoney.com and will appear in the August issue of Money, on newsstands July 21.
