What Do New Parents Really Need?

Food, Personalized Gifts Always Welcome

POSTED: 2:46 pm PST January 9, 2009

Few things are as overwhelming as the first weeks after bringing a new baby in to the world. It's this time that many new parents realize the value of support from friends and family.

Support can be shown in many different ways. For most people, it is in the form of a gift for the new parents.

Gift Ideas: What To Give

Many new mothers have baby showers before the child is born where they receive necessities such as clothes, rattles and high-chairs. But what about after the baby comes?

There are several unique things that you can do for new parents without spending a fortune.

Food

The days after coming home from the hospital are hectic for parents. They've got a lot on their minds and are adjusting the newborn's schedule, so they lose time for other common activities such as eating regular meals.

Why not show up at the home of newborn parents with a fully-prepared meal ready to eat? You can watch the baby while they enjoy their first sit-down meal in days. It would be hard to match the value to something like this for new parents.

“The essential is that it requires no effort to prepare or serve, can be reheated at a moment's notice and preferably, wolfed down in gulps, one-handedly,” wrote Kelly, on her blog Almost Frugal. "Whatever food I do give, I package it in reusable aluminum containers so that the recipient doesn't have to worry about keeping track of it and giving it back.”

Personalize, Personalize, Personalize

In our world, anything can be personalized. Pictures can be added, too!

Parents are going to be more than willing to hold onto any keepsake they receive at this point in the child's life to remember the special time, especially if it has their child's name, face or birthday on it.

Bibs, blankets, picture frames, rocking chairs, toy boxes, books, piggy banks and clothes can all be personalized.

Don't Forget Siblings

If the new baby has older siblings, odds are the attention that brother or sister gets from mom and dad is going to drop drastically when the new baby comes. Some children will handle this differently than others, but you can help occupy the siblings' time with a toy, book or doll for them that will consume their time while the new parents are looking after the infant.

Or, just do something for the older siblings to make them feel special to and understand the enormity of the event.

The Labor Of Love suggests that new parents throw a big brother or big sister party, where older children could invite their friends and have a celebration.
