BULVERDE, Texas -- Twelve volunteers at the Bulverde Humane Society are stripping down to raise money for homeless animals, KSAT-TV in San Antonio reported.

The women have posed topless in a 2010 calendar that is being described as not only the first of its kind in Bulverde, but possibly in the entire state.

"I've seen the movie 'Calendar Girls' and thought it was fantastic, so I thought, 'Why don't we do this? Why can't we do this?' " said Barbara Hall, president of the Bulverde Humane Society.

With donations down but an ever increasing number of animals at the shelter, Hall said the humane society needed to be creative with their fundraising. So Hall said she presented the idea to Lynda Binkley, the organization's secretary, who loved the idea and asked the rest of the board for its approval.

Her idea was not only endorsed by the board, but several volunteers at the shelter wanted to be in the calendar.

"(There's) not much I wouldn't do for this shelter and these animals," said Binkley.

So with 17 Bulverde-area businesses sponsoring the printing of the calendar, and with help from a local photography shop, the women shed their shirts and posed with homeless animals for the 12-month calendar.

The Bulverde pinup models range in age from 28 to almost 75.

Reviews, they admit, have been mixed but mainly favorable.

"My granddaughter's boyfriend said, 'Kudos to you, it's going to college with me,' " said Binkley.

But while it's been fun for the Bulverde women, they said it was important to remain tasteful and never forget their goal: to raise money for homeless animals. The Bulverde Humane Society hopes to raise at least $12,000 with their calendar.

"I think everybody had a lot of fun, and we knew it was going to be older women, but it's really about the dogs," said Jennifer Hamlett, aka Ms. February.

Hamlett said she made sure all of the women felt comfortable with their pictures and positioned the animals, or in some cases flowers or even a motorcycle, for taste.
