Fire Destroys Home Near Glennville

Damages Estimated Around $350,000

An electrical fire completely destroyed a home in a remote community in Kern County's mountains Wednesday night.

The residents were able to make it out safely, but the two-story home off Poso Flat Road in the Stone Mountain community was a total loss.

An electrical short in a dryer at the home ignited the blaze before 5 p.m. Wednesday, but by the time fire crews could get to it, there wasn't much they could do to save it.

"The home was in between the Glennville and the Woody stations, and the closest station is 35 minutes out," Battalion Chief Rey Ramirez of the Kern County Fire department said. "There just wasn't enough water supply to make a meaningful attack and do any better than this on the structure."

By the time fire crews arrived, the fire had already spread to the attic of the two-story home and advanced too quickly for firefighters to get it under control. They were able to salvage the garage, which contained thousands of dollars worth in valuables.

If a structure was going to have a good shot at survival it was this one," Ramirez said. "The residents had really done a good job with preparing the structure and it was just a shame to see it go."

The firefight had gotten so desperate at one point that additional firefighters were flown in from Meadows Field to battle the blaze.

"We needed more manpower out there because what we had initially was two engine companies on the scene which is six personnel," county fire Captain Brandon Smith said.

That made a difference in keeping the fire from spreading to other homes.

"It's a sad situation, but it could've been so much worse had there not been some hazard reduction work done," Ramirez said. "This is just one structure; the rest of the neighbors are still safe."

The damage was estimated around $350,000. The homeowner, distraught about the fire told ABC23 off-camera several small pets were likely killed in the fire, and many irreplaceable things inside the home were destroyed.
