TEHACHAPI, Calif. -- Camping at Tehachapi Mountain Park will cost you $14 a night, and while it is considered primitive camping because there are no hookups, they do have showers and flushable toilets which is always a plus.Tehachapi Mountain Park is located in the Tehachapi Mountains, just about 10 miles outside Tehachapi. There are 60 campsites and even a group campsite equipped with 10 cabins and a mess hall making it perfect to rent for any sort of family function.
Stuart Etherton with Kern County Parks and Recreation said the group campsite is used regularly for family reunions, church groups and scouting adventures."We just had a family reunion just this past weekend, and they’ve been coming up here the last 25 years, every summer,” said Etherton. Each campsite has a picnic table, grill and fire pit and just a short walk is showers, bathrooms and water spigots.Pets are also welcome to the park, you can even bring your horses.“We have a horse corral, so you just bring your own horses, and there is a place to store your horses, there’s a trough to water them down and a few trails for the horses,” said Etherton. There are also two hiking trails for campers, a tame quarter mile loop and a strenuous 2,000 mile climb to the top.Etherton said, "The quarter mile loop is for small families and small kids, they can do that no problem. The climb to the peak is a 2,000 foot pretty strenuous, straight up, constant up, but you can go as high as you want and there are some good vista points where you can get to a corner and see all of the valley, all of Tehachapi.”And even though school is out for the summer, the quarter mile nature trail is educational. The trail is marked throughout so you can learn about the history and vegetation of the park.If you would like to find out more about camping at Tehachapi Mountain Park, you can visit their Web site at http://www.co.kern.ca.us/parks/tehachapi.asp.
