Every year the city of Tehachapi has jets fly over the city, but Saturday around 1:30 p.m., during a practice run, one jet crashed along Old Town Road in the Golden Hills area killing both men inside the aircraft.

Tehachapi officials said the plane took off from Tehachapi Municipal Airport with two other aircrafts, but never returned.

The flags in downtown Tehachapi have already been lowered as one man has been confirmed as Tehachapi Airport Manager David Zweigle the other a test pilot from Colorado whose name has not yet been released.

Witnesses of the crash say they are stunned by what happened.

Jeanette Crounse who heard the crash said, "We're used to them on the Fourth of July, it's part of Tehachapi's Fourth of July, and it's just stunning, we're absolutely stunned."

She went on to say, "We didn't see it before, we just heard it because we were up behind the trees. And it just sounded like a sonic boom when it hit the ground."

Another witness, Roene Western said, "We ran out because we heard the jets coming, we've been watching them all day. I was standing in my driveway with my grandson and we saw the jets come over and the one took off and appeared to be doing what would be a roll, and the next thing I saw was a big plume of black smoke, and only two jets continuing on."

Tehachapi city officials said the plane was a L-29 Delfin.

Kern County Sheriff's Department said the aircraft went down in the street, luckily avoiding many houses in the area.

They said there have been no other reports of injuries on the ground.

The crash did cause a fire, but luckily Kern County Fire crews were able to put it out before it spread.

The cause of the crash is unknown, but the Sheriff's Department said the investigation will be turned over to the NTSB.

Tehachapi City Manager Greg Garrett said in a statement released Saturday evening, "Dave touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with and was more than a great asset to the Tehachapi community; he was a shinning example of integrity and charity."

Dave Zweigle, a Bear Valley Springs resident, is survived by his wife and two children.
