Camp Blue Jay Needs Your Help

POSTED: 4:07 pm PDT July 8, 2009
UPDATED: 6:14 pm PDT July 8, 2009

The Society for Disabled Children in Kern County has been running Camp Blue Jay every year since 1975, but the group may be forced to cancel their annual trip if they don’t find a nurse.

Camp Blue Jay is a summer camp held at Tehachapi Mountain Park for disabled kids age 7 to 18.

This year between 40 to 50 kids are planned to take the camping trip, but it could all be cancelled by Thursday afternoon if the group doesn’t find a nurse able to come along on the trip.

Campers disabilities range from mild to moderate and a nurse is required at the overnight camp for the campers safety as well as to disperse medication.

Executive Director Patricia Henson said, "We actually had a nurse staff lined up for camp this year, and they had to back out due to personal reasons. So, we found ourselves without a nurse and we’re really struggling to find one right now because we can’t send our campers up to camp with out a nurse being on the campground.”

Henson said a nurse, or nurses, are needed 24 hours a day during the two week camp.

They will be provided with their own cabin with a bathroom and shower, and while volunteers would be ideal, Henson said if need be, the group could provide a small stipend.

Camp Blue Jay is the only camp for disabled children in Kern County and they need your help to make this camp happen this year.

If you or someone you know is a nurse and willing to help Camp Blue Jay out for any amount of time from July 12-25, please contact them before 4 p.m. Thursday at 661-322-5595.

If the camp does not find a nurse, it will be cancelled for all the children.
