12 Farm Workers Hit With Chemical Spray

5 Workers Sent To Local Hospital

Around 8:15 a.m. Friday, a call was received by the Kern County Fire Department, for the report of a chemical over spray, on to farm workers in a field at the junction of Highline and Pellisier roads in Cummings Valley.

18 Kern County Firefighters responded to the incident assisted by Kern County Environmental Health Department, Stallion Springs Police Department and CHP.

Upon arrival, crews were faced with approximately 12 farm workers who had been exposed to a chemical overspray from an adjacent field, said Sean Collins with the Kern County Fire Department.

Several victims were suffering with adverse symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and general feeling of unwell.

Five victims received emergency decontaminated and were subsequently transported to local area hospitals, Collins said.

The Mass Decontamination Unit arrive from Lamont and decontaminated a further seven victims, Collins said.

The chemical was identified as an insecticide which was being applied to an adjacent field. This is now under the control of the Kern County Environmental Health Department.

During the victim evaluation process 2 Hall Ambulance employees displayed signs of sickness, 1 was transferred to a local area hospital, Collins said.
