Lake Isabella Labor Day Safety

POSTED: 3:51 pm PDT September 4, 2009
UPDATED: 4:55 pm PDT September 4, 2009

During the busy Labor Day weekend, agencies are estimating that nearly 5,000 people will head to Lake Isabella compared to the 800 on any other given weekend.

And an increase in visitors could mean an increase in incidents, but officers are hoping educating visitors will make sure that isn't the case.

Sgt. Norman Eades with Kern County Parks said, "For the most part, people come out and enjoy themselves, have fun. Now and then, we have to remind people what the rules are. One of our big jobs is education, make sure they know the rules of the lake, make sure they know what not to do while they're out there."

Officers said they don't want to ruin someone's weekend by issuing them a ticket but that means boaters have to obey the rules of the water.

And that includes having your boat registered, special lake permits and life jackets for everyone on board.

"Be smart, use your head," said Eades, "If someone's down or there's another boat in front of you, slow down, give them a wide birth. If you're within 200 feet of the shoreline, go 5 mph. That's probably our biggest headaches and most common violation is the 5 mph zone."

Officers also want to remind people that alcohol and water don't mix.

Authorities said the .08 intoxication limit when it comes to operating a car is the same with a boat.

Eades said, "It's legal to have alcohol on a boat, however, just like a car, .08. Make sure it's not done in excess. Come out and relax and enjoy, just don't take anything in excess, and that includes the speed and alcohol."

But it won't only be the waterways being patrolled. With camp sites sold out, the Sequoia National Forest will also be making sure campers stay safe.

One of the biggest concerns are fires, and while campfires are allowed Forest Services wants to remind campers to be responsible.

Geri Adams with the Seqouia National Forest said, "Do not leave the fire unattended at any time. The wind blows here every afternoon, ir's very typical, and just one spark and you can have a huge fire. We don't want that. We have been lucky here for the most part up here in the valley, we'd like to keep it that way."

Also, if you would like to have a campfire, you must purchase a permit.

The permit can be purchased at the Bureau of Land Management in Bakersfield or at the Ranger Stations in Lake Isabella or Kernville.

For boat permit information, you can call 760-379-2806.
