Tehachapi Man Hopes To Win Big On 'Pinks All Out'

UPDATED: 6:11 pm PDT September 10, 2009

Larry Wiggins, 60, used to race back in the late 1960s but gave it up when he started a family.

Fast forward nearly 30 years to 2001, and his wife, Ellen Wiggins, told him he should race again, and do it with the family's 1953 Chevy 210 Sedan.

"He built that car for me in 1985 and it was my grocery getter and our family car, and when I wasn’t able to drive anymore, I told him to take it and race it,” Ellen Wiggins said.

Larry Wiggins said he was shocked, but excited to get back in the driver's seat and race down the quarter mile, but it was an uphill battle.

“We took it out the first time and it ran something like a 16.90 with a small motor and everything," Larry Wiggins said, "and on the way home, this one really got me good, she said, ‘what do you have to do to that thing to make it go faster? That was embarrassing.’”

Over the past eight years, Larry has worked on the car to make it faster and now runs the quarter mile at nearly 117 (add space)mph.

Larry Wiggins said with everything he has put into the car, it can finish the quarter mile in just 11.6 seconds. Larry is hoping that time will be good enough to qualify him to be one of the top 16 racers that will participate in Speed TV’s "Pinks All Out."

But he knows the difference between winning and losing could come down to just one one hundreth of a second, so even the smallest mistake could cost him.

“Taking off with an arm drop, if you’re just a little bit late, you’re going to lose,” said Larry Wiggins.

But losing is not on his mind, he has his eye on the $10,000 prize money that comes with crossing the finish line first and beating out more than 500 other drivers for "Pinks All Out."

On Friday, Larry Wiggins and the other drivers will hold test runs, but the big competition will begin Saturday with the gates opening at 7 a.m. and the drivers racing all day long leading up to the final round scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets to the event are still available, but can only be purchased at Famoso Raceway.

General addmission tickets are available at the front gate, limited reserved seating will be available next to Gate 2.
