TEHACHAPI, Calif. -- The centennial mural will be the ninth mural used to decorate the city, but it’s special because it not only commemorates the city's centennial, but because it is being painted in under 24 hours.Completing the centennial mural in such a short amount of time means a lot of hard work and dedicated artists, who are all locals from Tehachapi.“We have a range of artists, some are professional, some are amateur and some are just painting backgrounds, that don’t have a lot of artistic history," said Charles White with Main Street Tehachapi's Murals Committee, "but they all wanted to pitch in and help because this is a community event.”
And while it is a challlenge to paint the mural in a day, the dozen or so volunteer painters aren’t overwhlemed.Lyn Bennett said "It’s definitely doable, and we have so many people participating that it’s coming along wonderfully.”But while the mural is being painted in a day, designing the mural has been months in the making with the city’s Heritage Club and Murals Committee working with a master muralist.Colleen Veyna, who designed with mural with the help of the city said, "They came up with pictures they felt were appropriate for Tehachapi, and they e-mailed them to me. We did it all over e-mail. They e-mailed the photos to me and then I collaged them together on my computer.”The final design consists of three different panels along Tehachapi Boulevard. The first represents the city at the time of its incorporation back in 1909, the last has images of the city today, like windmills and the renovated historical Beekay Theatre, and the panel inbetween represents just that, the 100 years inbetween.White said, "One objective in doing the murals is to have the history of the city shown on the walls, that way, not only the locals, but also tourists, other people can actually park, get out, walk along the streets and see the murals, and help to understand the history of our area.”The dedication ceremony for the centennial mural will take place Saturday at 3 p.m., but throughout the afternoon, the city will be celebrating its history through art and will even have costumed actors from the Tehachapi Communiy Theatre in front of each of the nine murals to tell the city's history.
