Tehachapi Principal Spends Night On School's Roof

Principal Wanted To Motivate Students To Better Test Scores

Cummings Valley Elementary School was nearly silent on Thursday night.

No kids crossing the quad, no teachers walking the corridors, they had all gone home for the day.

But one person, Principal David Spencer, hadn’t gone home for the day.

Instead, he was setting up camp on the roof of the school.

According to third grade teacher Cherie Chavez, it all started last year when Spencer wanted to motivate the students to do better on their state test scores.

Chavez said, "He decided to come up with a motivator and his motivator was to sleep on the roof. And he went around to all of the third grade classrooms first saying, ‘hey, if you bring up your test scores better then last year, we’re going to have me sleep on the roof.’ And so, they kids were like, ‘he won’t do it, he won’t do it,’ and we thought well, we’ll see.”

Friday morning, the school was a buzz with kids wondering if Spencer actually slept on the roof.

Fourth grade student Hunter Jones said, "I didn’t really believe it because sometimes teachers say stuff but they might be afraid to do it do they don’t actually do it.”

But their proof came when a teacher headed up to the roof to wake up Spencer with the help of the students.

They all yelled, “Rise and shine Mr. Spencer.”

And while it wasn’t his best night of sleep, Spencer said it was important to hold up his end of the deal.

“I want to teach them about integrity and when you make a promise, you keep it," said Spencer, "so, I made that promise a year ago because I told them if they could do better this year then they did last year on their state assessments that I would be on the roof.”

Spencer said while him sleeping on the roof of the school was a motivator, the improved test scores are a testament to the teachers and students hard work.

But now on everyone’s mind, what will Spencer do next year?

Teacher Eric Loe said, "I think he is going to have to up the game a little bit, what it is, I don’t know.”

But some students, like Lindsey Jones, already have their own ideas.

"I think he should color his head pink," said Lindsey Jones.
