KERNVILLE, Calif. -- A man known for his charitable contributions in Bakersfield has died in a motorcycle accident in Kernville along with his wife.ABC23 has received confirmation from family members that 58-year-old Jim Harmon was killed at about 10 a.m. Saturday.Harmon was the president of the Bakersfield Toy Run. The group was dedicated to collecting toys and food for families in need.
The California Highway Patrol said both Harmon and his wife were on their motorcycle headed south on Sierra Way.At the same time, 74-year-old Hazel Halloran was driving north on the same road when she lost control of her Buick and crashed into them head-on.Both Harmon and his wife were ejected from their motorcycle.Family members said the couple was on their way to a weekend conference aimed at promoting motorcycle safety.Harmon was taken to Kern Valley Hospital where he died a few hours later. His wife was airlifted to Kern Medical Center where she also died as a result of her injuries.Halloran received minor injuries.The CHP is still investigating.
