TEHACHAPI, Calif. -- There is a huge push for renewable energy, but wind farms in Tehachapi have not been able to expand because they literally could not squeeze another megawatt of power into the current transmission line.Southern California Edison is building another transmission line as part of the Tehachapi Renewable Transmission project.SCE's Project Manager Don Johnson said, "This project will provide that transmission capacity to actually get that renewable power into the grid, so they can actually develop the area to its fullest potential.”
TRTP will provide access of up to 4,500 megawatts of renewable electricity when it's completed. That’s enough to power nearly three million homes each year, making it the largest renewable transmission project in the country.Jennifer Geeslin with Terra-Gen Power in Tehachapi said, "As we all know, we can’t pick where the wind is and we have a great resource here, so by having the wind hub and our relationship with SCE, we’re going to be able to bring everything to fruition and you know, have history in the making and have everything really start here.”The project also means a huge economical impact for Kern County.Linda Parker with the Kern Wind Energy Association said, "From the tax assessments alone, it’s projected that we will be matching the same tax assessments of the oil industry by 2030 and that’s to the tune of billions of dollars.”The county won’t just benefit from tax dollars, now that the wind companies can build new turbines and also replace old ones they’ll need more people to help build and maintain them.“One megawatt equals about 4.6 jobs per megawatt so if you look at that," said Parker. "That’s thousands of jobs in Kern County that will be available.”The project consists of 11 segments that will equal 250 miles of new and upgraded transmission lines that will deliver electricity from the wind farms in Tehachapi to areas all over Southern California. The TRTP will also be a huge step towards meeting the renewable energy goals mandated by the state of California. The first three segments will be completed by the end of the year and SCE hopes to have rest completed by 2013.
