MOJAVE, Calif. -- The show will start with a bang as retired Air Force Gen. Chuck Yeager, the first man to break the sound barrier, attempts to do so once again -- but this time in an F-35.Edwards Air Force Base officials said they are excited about the show which is scheduled to have jets, vintage airplanes and war birds flying high.Col. Bill Thornton said, "We are really excited about showing everyone what their United States Air Force is all about; what our aircraft are, our capabilities. The theme of this years show is ‘Flight Test Nation,’ celebrating the United States as an aerospace nation, the contributions of Edwards Air Force Base and the Valley to aerospace.”
But the Air Force won’t be the only one showing off.Numerous private pilots are also taking part in the show and pulling out all the stops.Pilot Julie Clark explained what spectators can expect.“Well, we do loops, rolls, cuban eights, hammerheads, point rolls, vertical rolls," said Clark. "We do the full gamma of aerodynamics flown to music, fireworks, multi colored smoke, all kinds of neat stuff.”And while Clark has over 30 years of flying experience both commercially and in shows, back in the 1970’s, she remembers the sturggles of being a woman and trying to turn her dream of flying into a career.“When I was trying to get an interview, they would hang up on me, say, ‘Oh, we’re not hiring women.’ On my application, I would just skip the little square that said, ‘sex: male or female,’ maybe they wouldn’t notice that I skipped that. And at a point, I was even saying my name was Julian, just so maybe they would think I was a guy,” said Clark.Today Clark has over 29,000 hours of flying and has been in over 1,000 shows. She said the shows give her an opportunity to inspire.“If I can inspire one child, one show, every weekend, I feel I will have accomplished something of matter in this world,” said Clark.Clark is just one of the many pilots you can see in action at Saturday's show. Also at the show, there will be the U.S. Army parachute team, the Golden Knights, as well as a reenactment of the attack on Pearl Harbor, complete with explosions. The event is free and gates will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.For more information, visit www.edwards.af.mil.
