ROSAMOND, Calif. -- EMS says it is the county that sets ambulance rates, not Hall Ambulance, but the owner of Willow Springs Raceway says he is tired of having no other option then Hall Ambulance. Now, the track owner is coming up with his own options.Hall Ambulance has the exclusive service rights to the Willow Springs Raceway, but race track owner Bill Huth said the stand-by ambulance service is getting to be too expensive, running about $1,000 a day for one ambulance.
Huth said he should be able to hire any ambulance service.“All I say, is that they have no right to tell me I can’t hire an ambulance or buy an ambulance myself and use the ambulance as long as I get people in the ambulance that are qualified," said Huth.Huth said an alternative to having the stand-by ambulance is to have their own EMT’s on site instead.“So what I was trying to do was to put medics in the crash truck to go to the wreck, and if they thought they needed an ambulance, then I was going to phone the ambulance in town,” Huth said. The track tried this out one day last weekend, but it was a decision many riders disagreed with.Racer Karl Lowry said, "In a serious injury situation, minutes could be the difference in saving a life or not, and the time waiting for an ambulance to show up here could be the difference between someone losing their life or not.”Huth said the track will always have an ambulance on site, but eventually, he said he would like to have his own ambulance and medical center at the track, an option riders feel more comfortable with.Racer Matt Quigley said, "That sounds like a heck of an undertaking, but if that’s what they want to do, that sounds great. I mean if they were going to build a medical center and staff it with professionals that were trained for this kind of thing, that’d be great. I don’t see any problem there.”Huth said there is already a medical center at the raceway, but it does need to outfitted with all the necessary medical equipment. And EMS said while Huth can have his own EMTs, he is required to use Hall Ambulance service.
