CHP: Tree Saves Group's Life

KERN RIVER CANYON, Calif. -- An SUV with four people inside were saved by a tree after the vehicle they were riding in burst into flames after leaving the roadway in the Kern River Canyon.On Thursday around 11:30 a.m., an SUV was traveling eastbound on Highway 178 just east of Bakersfield.For some unknown reason, the driver tried navigating around a turn, lost control and went over the cliff.
The vehicle went off the cliff, rolled and came to a rest on a tree, but then caught fire, Officer Dugan Whisler with the CHP said.Whisler said two people were able to get out of the SUV and pull the remaining two people out.Whisler said the tree saved the group's life.Whisler said the people were from the Bodfish and Lake Isabella area and all had minor to moderate injuries.
