KERNVILLE, Calif. -- Whiskey Flat Days is an annual event that takes Kernville back to the days of the wild-wild west.Jill Thurman, the President of the Kernville Chamber of Commerce said, "It’s just fun to dress up, it’s fun to play and it’s got nothing but good roots to it, a lot of laughter. Everything is just tongue and cheek and meant to be just for fun.”But while the festival is about the history of the town, the race for mayor is about helping to make Kernville better in the future.
“Each one comes with a non-profit behind them so a worthy cause. Whether it’s a scholarship, or building something for kids or just building something for the aging adults,” said Thurman. So, for the last five weeks Tenderfoot Tony, Cimarron Cynthia, and Turncoat Chris have been busy raising money to make sure they are the 2010 mayor of Whiskey Flat Days.Turncoat Chris is raising money to help build a bicycle park for the community.“The kids are really tugging at our coat tails to get this project off the ground, we’ve already started building and this was just one more way to raise a lot of money,” said Turncoat Chris.Tenderfoot Tony is hoping to raise some funds to help off set some of the costs of youth football and cheerleading.“We’re trying to help out the kids that can’t seem to fund the money because their parents are having a hard time right now," said Tenderfoot Tony. And Cimarron Cynthia is hoping to raise enough money so the ECHO program, which has high schoolers shadow health professionals, can continue.“They learn, they job shadow to see if the health care industry is where they want to be whenever they graduate," said Cimarron Cynthia. "And most of them, at least two-thirds are high risk teenagers.”So the mayor won’t be elected by ballots instead who ever raises the most cash for their cause. And while each candidate thinks they will come out on top.“We’re going to win this thing, absolutely. We don’t have a lot of competition this year," said Turncoat Chris.Tenderfoot Tony responded, "He’s always talking a big game; the only problem is we’ll see when it comes down to the wire.”They all agree the real winners are the charities.“We have all of the charities we are raising money for, and those are the guys that are going to win,” said Cimarron Cynthia.Whiskey Flat Days will kick off Friday, Feb. 12 and the 2010 mayor will be announced that Saturday. So be sure to buy your favorite candidates bribe raffle ticket before then, or you can just buy some from each to support their causes.
