Train Derailment Causes Major Fire Near Keene

On Saturday night about 9:30 p.m., a Keene resident heard a train derailment and called 911.

When fire crews arrived, they found two derailed BNSF tankers on fire inside of tunnel No. 9 on the Tehachapi Loop.

According to BNSF, denatured alcohol inside one of the tankers seemed to be the catalyst for the fire.

BNSF spokesperson Lena Kent said, "Upon arriving on scene, we found that we did have one car of denatured alcohol on fire, and according to fire fighters the best course of action was to let the denatured alcohol burn itself out."

Concern over toxic smoke prompted fire crews to evacuate households within a one-mile radius.

Jennifer Smart with Kern County's Red Cross Disaster Relief said they set up a temporary shelter at Tehachapi High School, but closed it just before 3 a.m. Sunday because all of the affected residents were staying with family or friends.

Fire crews worked alongside Union Pacific and BNSF to remove the tankers from the tunnel and extinguish the fire.

Kent said, "In addition to that car being on fire, we also have a car of plastic pellets on fire and also a car of corn meal. Currently, the fire department is spraying foam over those two fires to suppress the fire."

Aaron Hunt with Union Pacific, who operates the tracks, said it is too early to tell what the fire has done to the integrity of both the tracks and the tunnel.

"We're still just working on extinguishing the fire, making sure we do so safely and then once we get that taken care of, then we'll start to assess where we are in terms of how much repairs need to be done, how long we're looking at keeping that line closed, etc. "

No injuries from the fire or derailment have been reported and BNSF is currently investigating what caused the tankers to be derailed.

Train traffic was diverted to Union Pacific's coastal route.

Kern County Fire lifted the evacuation late Sunday night.
