TEHACHAPI, Calif. -- When faced with an unplanned pregnancy, many people can feel as though they have no where to turn for support and guidance. But the Family Life Pregnancy Center of Tehachapi has spent the past 20 years making sure no one goes with out the help, support and education they need.Rhonda Creten with the center said, “It’s an outreach to provide woman hope. The hope that they’re not sure how they’re going to make it, how they’re going to support their babies, and it gives us the chance to let them know that there are people willing to help you and give you the resources that you need.”From free pregnancy tests to counseling to education about pregnancy to the time a child is 2 years old, the nonprofit center provides parents the resources to be the best parents they can be. And they’ve provided these resources to more than 12,000 parents.
Amy Gregory is one of those parents.“I’m a lot more confident in everything I do and every step I make as a parent, and I’m more prepared. They let me know what I am going to be getting in to and what things I’m going to need,” said Gregory. One of the most successful programs at the center is 'Earn While You Learn,' where parents get rewarded with points to use in the center's boutique for attending and participating in classes.“Our clients earn mommy money and daddy dollars in that class, and that’s where they get to come up and shop in our boutique and earn material assistance that helps with their babies. Pregnancy clothes, diapers, formula, all of that wonderful stuff that they need,” said Creten. And for the parents, the earn while you learn program is a big help.“Being a single parent and not having the financial stability to obtain a bassinet, clothing, or anything, they give you the opportunity to get all of those items,” said Gregory. The center is able to provide all of the services for free thanks to community donations and support.“Volunteers that answer the phones, that clean the center, that counsel with the women who come in, all the way to monetary donations, and clothing and furniture. If we didn’t have the support of the community it would probably be near impossible to make things happen,” said Creten. The center is holding its annual banquet dinner fundraiser on Thursday to not only celebrate the past 20 years of service but to also raise funds so they can continue to provide support to residents in need.If would would like more information on the center, you can go to their Web site at www.FamilyLifePC.org.
