TEHACHAPI, Calif. -- On Tuesday, voters of Tehachapi will decide whether or not to recall Mary Graham, Patty Snyder and Holly Hart.

Friends of the Recall, a group that spearheaded the recall campaign, is confident the trustees will be recalled.

Tim Trujillo, with Friends of the Recall, said, "I think that given the numbers we had that signed the petitions for the recall, I think we’re very hopeful that it will pass.”

Friends of the Recall did get over 4,000 signatures in order to hold the special election, but there are many people in the community who do not support the recall in part because of the roughly $150,000 bill the school district has to pay for the special election.

Dave Rheinhart, who is voting "no" on the recall said, "This particular recall, as a taxpayer, I’m somewhat outraged because of the cost, emotionally, but basically the monetary cost.”

Many people who are against the recall said the proponents should’ve just waited until the general election this November and avoided the costly bill of the special election.

Trujillo Disagrees.

“The citizens felt so strongly that the board was making inappropriate decisions and doing the wrong kind of things that we just felt we had to go forward with it, regardless. We don’t think it’s wise on putting a price on the right thing. We think the right thing needs to be done whenever that might occur,” said Trujillo.

But it’s not just about money, opponents of the recall think bringing in three new board members when there are huge budget decisions that need to be made, is simply a bad idea.

“If the three proponents of the recall are elected to the position, they’re in for a rude awakening because they are going to be facing some really tough decisions,” said Rheinhart.

Those for the recall agree that tough decisions are ahead, but said that’s not a reason to keep the three current board members.

Mark Gividen, a teacher at Jacobsen Middle School, said, "Whoever comes in is going to have a difficult time, but they will be people we hope will be able to make decisions. The last three, as a block, made poor decisions.”

The recall election has divided much of the community, but one thing everyone seems to agree on, no matter what side you're on, is getting things back to normal after this Tuesday.

"I just hope that this can be reconciled by both sides because I know there are some bitter feelings in this community,” said Rheinhart.

“I hope everybody gets together and works hard to make it a good school district, that’s really what we’re all about,” said Trujillo.

Both sides also hope everyone shows up to the polls because even one vote could mean the difference of being recalled or not.

Mary Graham, Patty Snyder and Holly Hart are up for recall individually. If Graham is recalled, candidate Chris Duff will take her seat. If Snyder is recalled, candidate Diane Peterson will take her seat. And if Holly Hart is recalled, candidate Chuck Hansen will take her seat.

According to Kern County Elections Department, if the current trustees are recalled, the newly elected board members would be certified on March 19 and then officially take their seat on the school board at the next school board meeting on March 23.

Polls will be open on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
