TEHACHAPI, Calif. -- A 17-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital when she made a turn on her bicycle crashing into an approaching vehicle.Around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, a 2005 Toyota Matrix driven by Philip Waterstradt of Tehachapi, was traveling eastbound on Highline Road in the area of Water Canyon Road.As he continued east, his vehicle collided with a bicycle being ridden eastbound by 17-year-old Harley McDaniel, the CHP reported.
CHP officers said that the evidence at the scene indicates that McDaniel was riding on the north side of the roadway and attempted to cross over to the south side directly in the path of the approaching vehicle.McDaniel was wearing dark clothing and riding upon a gray bicycle, this in addition to the time of day may have been a factor in Waterstradt not seeing her prior to the crash, Officer Ed Smith said.McDaniel was not wearing a helmet and received major injuries as a result of this crash. She was transported to Kern Medical Center.Waterstradt was not injured.Alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The CHP warns all bicyclists to always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.
