BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Research has repeatedly shown that weight loss from obesity surgery can send many patients with type 2 diabetes into remission.Initial cure rates are as high as 90 percent in some studies, but until now doctors have not known how lasting the remission is. Now two new studies from Virginia Commonwealth University and New York University have shown that obesity surgery often drives away diabetes for years.Researchers tracking 177 patients found that 60 percent remained diabetes-free five to 16 years after their operations.
A second study found a lower long-term cure rate -- 40 percent were still in remission after five years, but an additional 40 percent of patients had dramatically improved their blood sugar levels and cut down on their medications. Results showed that patients who controlled their diabetes with diet or medication had a greater chance for long-term remission. Those on insulin were more likely to relapse. And keeping the weight off through diet and exercise was also important. People who regained significant weight after their operations often had their diabetes return as well.
