Lakers Won't Match Offer For Turiaf

POSTED: 11:24 pm PDT July 18, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Lakers will not match the four-year, $17 million offer sheet forward Ronny Turiaf signed with the Golden State Warriors last week, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak announced Friday.

Since the Lakers are already over the trigger point for the luxury tax, the Lakers would be assessed a fine equal to any amount spent. Kupchak couldn't justify the money for the six-foot-ten, 250-pound Turiaf, based on the projected minutes he would have played for the Lakers next year. The projected return of injured big men Andrew Bynum and Chris Mihm to the lineup next season would have further complicated a crowded Lakers front court.

The three-year vet averaged career-bests of 6.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in 78 games last season, but was reduced to 2.0 points and 1.4 boards in the postseason.
