MySpace.com Used To Track Sex Offender

A registered sex offender was tracked through MySpace.com after violating his parole, according to officials with the sheriff's department.

Brandon Bigsby, 24, had been seen in the Taft area earlier this week, and his GPS tracker was found near the front door of the Taft College library. His parole required him to stay away from the town and wear the tracker. An investigation indicated that Bigsby had a page on MySpace.com and was frequently visiting the site at public libraries in Bakersfield and Taft.

On Thursday, officers were dispatched to Taft College, where they found Bigsby's GPS tracking device. He was believed to have left an hour previously to the deputies' arrival. Deputies tracked Bigsby to the Beale Library in downtown Bakersfield, where he accessed a MySpace forum. Officials arrived and found Bigsby, where he was arrested. The library does not monitor computer use or accessed sites, and only disciplines users who disrupt other people or staff, according to Nila Stearns, head librarian at Beale Library.

Bigsby was arrested and booked in the downtown jail on charges of violating the terms of his parole. He is not allowed out on bail, and according to sheriff's booking information, he is due in court on Tuesday.

Bigsby pleaded guilty to one count of a lewd and lascivious with a child under 14 years of age in May 2003, according to Superior Court records. He was sentenced to three years at Wasco State Prison and required to register as a sex offender. He is listed on the Megan's Law Web site.

Anyone who may have been in contact with Bigsby is encouraged to call the Taft substation of the sheriff's department at 661-763-8550.
