BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A local mother with a son serving in Iraq has started sending care packages of food and supplies to soldiers serving in the war, and she is asking the community to help.Karen Campbell of Tehachapi is calling the effort "Because We Care."The boxes are sent to her son, Spc. Padriac Campbell, who is serving near Baghdad, and being distributed by his platoon.
The 70-pound boxes are filled with items the soldiers say the need and want, such as: AT&T International calling cards, sunscreen wipes, Oreo cookies, soups in a cup, beef jerky, candy (no chocolate--it melts), and tuna salad snack packs, as well as any individually packed food items that can be eaten on-the-go.She also is collecting pens and stationary. In addition, she wants people to write or email messages to the troops on cards and they will be included in the deliveries.Monetary donations are also accepted to offset the shipping costs. You can drop off any donations at the ABC23 studios at 321 21st Street in Bakersfield, at the Whitewater Café in Kernville or at the Canine Creek Dog Wash and Boutique in Tehachapi. You can email Karen Campbell: rolinmilo101@yahoo.com or call her at: 661-821-6038
