Friends Remember Victim Of Accident Caused By Chase Suspect
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Family and colleagues are remembering a local auto salesman killed in a car accident that ended a brief police pursuit.
Dan Dawson, 36, was the driver of a black Lexus who was driving eastbound on Panama Lane on the Highway 99 overpass in south Bakersfield before 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. He was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.
Dawson worked for the last several months at Three-Way Chevrolet on California Avenue, where colleagues are trying to raise donations for Dawson's wife and two sons.
Colleagues remembered him as a quintessential family man who was very energetic and likeable.
Police were preparing to serve a warrant on Brian Marling, 29, of Bakersfield, when he left a residence in a Mitsubishi Galant. He initially yielded when police attempted to pull him over, but then fled down Panama Lane, weaving through traffic to get away.
But Marling's vehicle then collided into traffic on the overpass, hitting five other vehicles. Two other drivers were taken to hospitals.
Marling will be charged with vehicular manslaughter and various weapons, drug, gang and parole violations, according to Det. Greg Terry of the Bakersfield police department.
Police found an assault weapon and drugs at the residence, as well as drugs in Marling's possession, according to Terry.
Police are also conducting an administrative investigation into the pursuit to see if it was within department policy. Anyone with information is urged to call the Bakersfield police department at 327-7111.
