On Saturday at about 5:10 p.m., a Kern County Sheriff’s Deputy was westbound on Highway 178 near mile marker 18.5 when she was flagged down.

The mother of a 14-year-old Bakersfield boy reported her son was stranded on a rock, in the middle of the Kern River after floating down stream on a boogie board.

Prior to the search and rescue teams arriving Bakersfield Fire Department personnel were able to get a personal floatation device to the boy.

Search and Rescue Teams placed a raft in the water and attached it to a technical rope system.

The boat captain positioned the raft above the victim and back stroked the raft to within inches of the victim. The rescuer grabbed the boy and pulled him into the raft.

The rope system was used to move the raft up stream to the rivers edge.

The boy was checked by ambulance personnel and was found to be uninjured. He was then reunited with his family.
