Local Applebee's Supportive Of Nurse-In

UPDATED: 7:03 pm PDT September 10, 2007

A protest at a local Applebee’s restaurant last Saturday was part of a nationwide nurse-in to provide breast-feeding awareness to local communities.

The national nurse-in was in response to a recent incident in which a patron was asked to cover her breast with a blanket while nursing her baby in the back of a Kentucky Applebee’s restaurant.

The mother felt it was too hot to cover herself and nursing baby with a blanket.

Kentucky law states that nursing babies in public is not indecent exposure.

Christy Collins of Tehachapi responded to a Yahoo Groups message from the organization Births Without Boundaries. She is an advocate of breast-feeding and helped organize the Bakersfield version of the nurse-in at 9000 Ming Avenue. She’s also a baby store owner and mid-wife assistant in Tehachapi, Calif.

Collins said 38 people showed up for the Bakersfield nurse-in. There were 100 locations nationwide. She said, “Our local Applebee's was fabulous and very supportive and had no problem with us setting up right outside the entrance.”
