BHS Crime Unnerves Students, Local Business

Crime related to Bakersfield High students has unnerved students and at least one local business near the school.

Bakersfield.com reported that student fighting, vandalism, loitering and behavior problems have attributed to La Mina restaurant on H Street closing its doors to students without adult accompaniment between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The restaurant also claimed money has been stolen from a tip jar.

Students reporting in their own Bakersfield High School newspapers have also voiced concerns about theft of personal possessions on campus. They wondered if students should fear other students.

The October 19 edition of the Bakersfield High Blue & White newspaper has as its headline, “Campus Crawls With Pickpocketing Thieves.” The paper reported that expensive iPods, $600 cell phones and personal possessions have been stolen by student pickpockets.

One student reported two phones stolen within three weeks.

School officials, according to the Blue & White, claimed crime wasn’t a problem on campus.

On Oct. 18 a youth near South High reported having his iPod stolen by two men, one carrying a knife. John Esquivel, 22, and Carlos Mata, 20, both of Bakersfield were arrested for robbery on the 3400 block of South Chester Avenue.

Bakersfield.com reported that La Mina restaurant posted a letter to students that apologized to those young people who have "always behaved as perfect ladies and gentlemen" while at the restaurant.
