LAMONT, Calif. -- A fire broke out at a local oil refinery causing an unknown amount of damage.Firefighters said just after 12 a.m. Thursday, a pipe carrying a flammable material at the Kern Oil Refinery near Lamont burst. The liquid inside the tube caught fire.Kern County firefighters along with Hazmat teams put out the flames while plant workers shut down the pipe.
Crews said it took several hours for flames to finally die down. There were reports of other flare-ups throughout Thursday morning. No one was injured and no oil tanks were threatened. It's unknown how much damage the fire caused. The Hazmat team as well as workers from the Department of Environmental Health were on scene to monitor the air for any hazardous materials. None were found. The Thursday morning fire on Panama Lane was just the latest in a history of incidents at the facility that includes oil leaks, fires and a deadly explosion in 2005.In 2005 the refinery was slapped with an $80,000,fine by Cal Osha for 11 citations. That fine came after Duane Herdt was killed and two other men were injured in an explosion at the refinery. Also in 2005, the refinery was responsible for an oil leak that shut down part of Union Avenue. The Department of Environmental Health is monitoring the latest situation. The Kern Oil Refinery did not respond when ABC23 asked for an interview.
