Students at West High School returned to class one day after someone hung a Nazi flag from a campus flagpole on Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

According to police, the flag was flown from a lighted flagpole northeast of the school’s football field Sunday night.

While one resident said she saw the flag as early as 8 p.m. Sunday, police said they discovered the flag at about 12:30 a.m. Monday, which is Martin Luther King Jr.’s holiday, a day that teaches tolerance and reminds American of the historic fight for civil rights that MLK helped lead.

The flag was spotted by a neighbor flying from the top of the school's flagpole and was removed and seized by officers.

Students reacted Tuesday. Those who spoke to ABC23 were generally upset that such an act could take place, especially on the MLK holiday. Some students said they were disgusted and offended.

Surprisingly, ABC23 also came across students who didn't know who Adolf Hitler was.

Officials at the school said the reason the district didn't address the issue formally in all classes was that no students were on campus when the flag was found. Most students ABC23 came across knew about the incident from media reports.

It’s unknown who flew the flag or the exact reason. The investigation has now focused on who trespassed on campus.

In 2006, the controversial singing duo, "Prussian Blue" had their act cancelled at the Kern County Fair over security concerns and caused a national stir over the topic of white supremacy.

The Bakersfield-based duo is comprised of twin 13-year-olds Lynx and Lamb Gaede. Their mother, April Gaede, iconsiders herself a white Nationalist.
