Mountain Routes Open After Weather Closures

Snow, Ice, Rock Slides Closed Area Mountain Routes

Area mountain roadways, including portions of Interstate 5, are now open after hours of weather-related closures.

For the third time in 2008, drivers were redirected from the Grapevine on Interstate 5 after snow and ice were once again the culprit.

California Highway Patrol escorts are pacing traffic over the Interstate 5 summit.

For anyone hoping to get to Los Angeles through Tehachapi, Highway 58 has opened in both directions.

The California Highway Patrol closed down Highway 58 Sunday night at about 8 p.m. because of snow and ice. The road was closed until about 8 a.m. Monday.

Eastbound traffic was stopped at Towerline Road.

Westbound traffic was stopped at Highway 14 in Mojave.

Highway 178 has reopened to commuters hoping to drive from Lake Isabella to the Bakersfield area. Road crews shut it down Sunday morning because of rock slides.

It took six hours for bulldozers to clean up the mess before the road could reopen.
