BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A cameraman was chased after filming the aftermath of a shooting in downtown Bakersfield early Sunday. In a home video obtained exclusively by ABC23, dozens of people are seen pouring onto the street early Sunday morning from the Syndicate and other local area bars on 19th Street. Some of them are bloody, others are being detained by police in front of a rowdy crowd.
Police said it all started when 20-year-old Jesus Murillo was asked to leave the bar by bouncers. They said he pulled out a gun and fired four shots.Luckily no one was struck in the gunfire. It's unclear if Murillo is one of the people in the video. The bouncers were able to subdue Murillo. But then some in the crowd started focusing on the person taking the video and made threats against him.The person taking the video was local filmmaker, Rickey Bird of Hectic Films.Bird said that he was downtown to show a video his production crew created for Bakersfield band, the Dalloways, who were having a CD release party at Sandrini's.After he realized he heard gunshots, Bird said he grabbed his camera and headed to the scene."I ran back to my car," Bird said. "I grabbed my camera and as everyone was running away I was the only one running towards them."He said he wanted to get a few good shots of the event, but when he got close, people in the crowd started to get angry.Fearing for his safety, he ran off after several people yelled about him having a camera, including one man who asked him what he was doing with his filmmaking equipment there.Bird said he ran three blocks, got into his car, then got into another car to make sure he was safe with the footage.Although chaos ensued downtown, the Dalloways, who had performed at Sandrini's that evening, still have a positive take on the evening. "We were grateful for a fantastic evening at Sandrini's only to head upstairs to find a little slice of chaos happening down the street," Gerhard Enns of the Dalloways said. "This kind of situation unfortunately does nothing for the image of downtown. But those of us who know about the great venues and cafes will continue to spread the word and support the scene down there. Despite isolated incidents like this, it really is a great place to meet people, eat out, see fine art, and listen to music. It's Bakersfield's cultural hub!"In the meantime, Murillo was arrested on charges of assault with a firearm.
