DETROIT -- A metro Detroit man was convicted of first-degree felony murder Tuesday for the alleged hate crime death of a 45-year-old Arab-American man.
Brent Sever (pictured, left) was also convicted of second-degree murder and felony firearms, according to WDIV-TV in Detroit.
Sever was accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, Ali Al Mansoop (pictured, below), in the back and in the head on Sept. 19, 2001, on Buckingham Street in Lincoln Park, a suburb of Detroit.
The jury heard testimony that Sever shot the man because he is Arab-American. He reportedly told police following the crime that he was enraged by Sept. 11 events and that his motive for the shooting was because of the terrorist attacks, according to WDIV.
First-degree murder brings a mandatory life sentence without parole, the station reported.
Sever is scheduled to be sentenced next month.
