More than 100 Native American hikers are hoofing it from San Francisco to the nation's capital to rally for peace and the environment.

The Native American group walked from Delano along Highway 43 to Wasco Sunday afternoon.

They'll spend about a week hiking through Kern County on the way to Washington, D.C.

They say war and global warming are ravaging the earth and hope their efforts will help the planet.

"We're walking for all these good causes, fighting heart disease and diabetes and other illnesses. We're walking for peace and justice,” said Joseph Spado, who is involved with the effort.

Tribal leaders also plan on giving their blessing to a veterans’ cemetery slated to be built near where Highway 58 joins Highway 223.
