Kern County's western Mojave Desert landscape could include up to 300 more wind turbines in the near future.

Bakersfield.com reported Friday an approval by the Kern County Planning Commission to install up to 300 giant wind turbines near Rosamond. The PdV Wind Energy Project was approved 3-1 by the commission and will be developed by Power Partners Southwest LLC, an entity affiliated with enXco.

When completed, the wind turbines would be able to generate up to 300 megawatts of electricity, which is enough power for 90,000 homes.

Northrop Grumman complained they would have to shut down their nearby B2 bomber test facility if the turbines are built. Homeowners also protested that the pristine 6,000 acre site would be ruined by the development of the wind farm.

According to company officials, Kern County already leads the state when it comes to renewable energy. Commissioner Ron Sprague was reported to have said, “We all want green, efficient energy -- it's the thing to do.”

Rosamond is located in the western Mojave Desert, south of the town of Mojave, and southeast of Tehachapi, where the second largest wind farm in the world is located, with 5,000 turbines.

The largest wind farm in the world is located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
