Letters in Lamont may have a singed smell after someone tried to set the Post Office on fire, police said.

Kern County sheriff's deputies were called out at 7:30 p.m. Monday to reports of an assault.

When they arrived they found flames instead.

Crews were able to knock down the fire quickly, with only minor smoke and flame damage.

Deputies arrested a man on arson charges. They found him in the back of the building.
