Two Inmates Cause Statewide Lockdown Of Adult Prison Facilities

TEHACHAPI, Calif. -- Three male correctional staff were stabbed, and a female officer attacked, at the Tehachapi California Correctional Institution by two inmates on Thursday, causing all state prisons to continue to be locked down on Friday, officials said.According to prison officials, two correctional sergeants and one correctional officer were rushed by two inmates while they were in an office just off of the maximum security recreation yard where sergeants and lieutenants do paperwork.The injured staff were taken to Kern Medical Center for treatment of lacerations, stab and puncture wounds, officials said. They were listed in stable condition, but two sergeants, ages 34 and 41, have since been released.
CCI officials said the wounded staff included Sgt. Slankard who received superficial stab wounds, Sgt. Silva, who received lacerations to the neck and cheek and a nasal injury and Officer. Cacciola, who received a stab wound to the upper right shoulder. Silva, 40, who is a 10-year veteran, remains hospitalized in intensive care with a skull fracture.A 45-year-old female officer was also attacked and taken to an area hospital with a knee injury. She has been released.Both prisoners are affiliated with Southern California Hispanic prison gangs, officials said. Officials also said they used batons and pepper spray against the inmates who suffered injuries in the attack.One of the inmates is 36 years old and is serving a 25-year sentence for first-degree murder. He has been in prison since 1992. The other inmate is 47 years old and is serving a 117 year sentence for attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and assault with a deadly weapon. He has been in and out of prison since 1979. One the inmates (unknown which inmate) received head wounds and was airlifted, while the other received head wounds and complained of abdominal pain.Both inmates have been released from the hospital and transferred to Corcoran State Prison.The prison will remain locked down through the weekend and visitations are currently cancelled. Inmates affiliated identified as part of the Sureños, or Southern Hispanics, will remain on lockdown as investigators determine whether the incident was isolated.Officials added that two handmade weapons were discovered at the scene.The Tehachapi CCI, which opened in 1933, houses minimum, medium and maximum-security male inmates. The prison has has various rehabilitation programs, houses 4,705 inmates and employs 2,001 people.
