Bill Would Exempt Volunteers From Getting Paid

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Supports Roy Ashburn’s Bill 1345

POSTED: 9:34 am PDT April 7, 2008

A bill sponsored by local State Sen. Roy Ashburn is getting a helping hand from the governor of California.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will hold a press conference with Ashburn Monday on Senate bill 1345.

If approved it would allow volunteers to work on public projects like river cleanups by exempting them from having to be paid.

In California, volunteers must be paid wages, which can actually discourage volunteer work.

Ashburn's bill has already been defeated once in committee.
