K-9 Deputy Injured After Teen Driver Rammed Him

A Kern County sheriff's deputy is in the hospital and a 16-year-old driver is dead after an early morning shooting in Delano.

Just before 2 a.m., the sheriff's department said deputies pursued wanted suspects from McFarland for about an hour when the car stopped in a neighborhood along Belmont Street.

Deputies said two men got out of the vehicle and ran. When 39-year-old Deputy Doug Jauch tried to deploy a K-9, the driver of the car, 16-year-old Manuel Ayon, rammed him, according to deputies.

According to a press release, Jauch suffered minor injuries when he was struck by the suspect's vehicle. He has since been treated and released.

The sheriff’s department said 40-year-old Deputy Joe Weiss opened fire, but the Ayon escaped in the vehicle. Several blocks later, deputies said they confronted Ayon, but he tried to reach for something. Deputies said they then shot and killed him.

According to a press release, 20-year-old Salvador Villareal of McFarland who also fled from the vehicle and was arrested in Delano. He was charged with participating in a criminal street gang among other charges.

One man remains on the loose.
