BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The California Teachers Association called on local Assemblywoman Jean Fuller to take a stand against deep cuts to education. The teachers' union brought the "Cuts Hurt" bus tour to Fuller's Bakersfield office Wednesday morning. They want Fuller to reject the governor's proposed $4.8 billion in education cuts.
The CTA said Kern County schools stand to lose $40 million in education funding along with additional funding to agricultural departments at local high schools. They said the state spends about $1,600 per student less than the national average. In response to Wednesday morning's press conference, the governor's office said while education cuts are difficult, its working to correct the state's fiscal crisis so that cuts like this will never happen again.Several counter-protestors also gathered at the stop on the bus tour. They argued that teachers' pay should be based on performance and said that the teachers on the tour should stop whining and go back to teaching. They also cited a Sacramento Bee article, saying that California spends more per student than 22 other states. They noted that many of those students in states that California outspends do better than California students.
