BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Thursday morning, members of the Kern County Sheriff's Department remembered those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

More than 50 local officers have been killed protecting the public in Kern County since 1873.

Of those who died, 17 were sheriff's deputies or reserves.

Five sheriff's search and rescue volunteers have been killed, along with one citizen's service volunteer.

Next week is national police week. A memorial will be held nationwide.
