SHAFTER, Calif. -- There will soon be more beds to house inmates in Kern County.A $100 million state grant has been awarded to the Lerdo prison to build 790 beds.Officials said Kern was one of four counties awarded their full requested amount as part of funds from Assembly Bill 900.
Officials said the grant funds will help since inmates have been getting released early because of space restrictions. However, officials said they will have to come up with $37 million to match the state’s funding.Kern County Supervisors are trying figure out where the money will come from, but have indicated they would be willing to fund money through a local bond.
